Game 1  Devils VS Red Stox  5/06/2007  FHA  10am

The Devils got 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the 8th to break a 1-1 tie and held on to beat the Red Stockings on opening day. Bruce Hackett had a dominating performance for the Stox, striking out 13 and allowing just 5 hits but it wasn't enough. Marc Taranto started and threw 4 scoreless innings for the Devils, followed by 4 innings and one unearned run by Ed Martin who got the win. Rick Dyer came on and pitched a scoreless 9th for the save. New Devil Todd Campanella started on the right foot, throwing out Bruce Hackett at the plate from RF to end the 1st inning.
Game 2  Devils @ Bulldogs  5/12/2007  U of R  1pm

On Saturday, the Dawgs continued their hot start to the Season beating the Devils 14-0 in 7 Innings. Offensively, things got going right at the start with a couple runs in the first Inning supplied by the Cooley Brothers. Glenn Mott and Stacy Janke had 2 hits with 3 RBI's apiece while Dave Cooley added 4 more hits and 3 RBI's with 4 Runs scored. Jeff Grasley hit a long Double to plate 2 as well, in getting his first hit with the Club. Brian Ridley improved to 2-0 pitching 6 Strong Innings allowing just 1 hit, with 7 K's, Glenn Mott closed out the game with a scoreless 7th inning. Todd Campanella had the lone hit for the Devils. Mark Taranto has assembled a team that will win many games this season.
Game 3  Devils VS Giants  5/20/2007  FHA 1pm

The Devils put up two in the 1st and one in the 3rd and made it hold up in a battle with the Giants, winning 3-2. Ray was excellent for the Giants, going the full game and allowing just 3 hits with 4 walks and 9 K's. Marc Taranto pitched the first 6 for the Devils, allowing only 2 hits and two unearned runs while walking 6 and striking out 3. Dave Bryant pitched the last 3 for the save, allowing 2 hits, 3 walks, and striking out 7. The Devils used 3 walks and 3 SB's to plate 2 runs in the first. Jeff Mountain singled in the other run in the 3rd. Ray and Frank scored in the 6th for the Giants after drawing walks, scoring on the Devils only error and a single by Ryan. Overall, a good, close, well-played, well-pitched game.
Game 4  Devils VS  Lugnuts  6/03/2007  FHA 1:30pm

The Devils and Lugnuts took the field following the Cubs/Storm and played a very similar contest. The Lugnuts jumped out early with 2 runs in the top of the first on single by Todd, a double by Rob and a single by Mark off Devils starter Ed Martin. Alan set the first 6 Devils down in order thanks to solid defense behind him. Ed matched him with a pair of zeroes as well, thanks to more good defense. Todd Campanella made 3 good running catches in CF for the Devils and Ed helped himself with a 1-6-3 double play. The Devils scratched a run out in the bottom of the 3rd when Todd led off with a single, was bunted to second by Jay Taranto and scored on Jeff Mountain's groundout. The Nuts kept it 2-1 by throwing out Hamilton at home to end the inning on a bang-bang play. Ed got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 4th when Dave Bryant fielded a slow roller to 3rd and threw across for the out. Then the Devils got hot in the bottom of the 4th. Adam Freeman led off with a single and Marc Taranto doubled him home to tie it. Dave Bryant followed with another double to make it 3-2 and he later scored on a single by Gil Bussey to make it 4-2. Lugnuts 2B (name) made a number of good plays to keep the game close. Ed Martin pitched a scoreless 5th helped by another Devils DP. With two outs in the bottom of the 5th and Mountain on second and MarcT on 1st Dave Bryant hit a shot to LF. Lugnuts LF slipped charging the ball and it went to the fence, allowing both runners to score and making it 6-2. Then Marc Taranto relieved Ed Martin and the nasty weather arrived. The top of the 6th was played in strong winds as the storms approached. The first Lugnuts batter singled and stole second. Then Taranto drilled Varney with a heater putting runners on 1st and second (actually it was a changeup the wind blew 4 feet). After an infield putout moved the runners over a shot to SS was misplayed allowing two runs to score. But the Devils avoided further damage when Rick Dyer made a nice play at SS and Jay Hamilton caught a high, blowing fly ball to end the inning. Lightning started hitting the area and the game was eventually called. It's a shame because we had a really good game going and it was going to go down to the wire. In a nice ending to a good game the two teams hung out afterwards to rehash the game and quench our thirsts - we highly recommend the white chili and wings at Crummers in Penfield.
Game 5  Devils @ Red Wings  6/10/2007  Roth 1:30pm

Beautiful clear sunny skies for the 1:30 game at Roth. The Devils put together a two out rally in the first. A walk to Marc Taranto started it, then a sharp single by Dave Bryant and another by   Gil Bussey made it 1-0. Then one of those "I've never seen that in all my years of baseball" plays happened. The Devils had the bases loaded with two outs and an 0-2 count on Todd Campanella. He swung and missed at a ball in the dirt and all the runners took off. Wings catcher Mike chased the ball down and broke for home plate but Dave raced in just ahead of the force out to make it 2-0. Dave Bryant pitched the first 3 innings for the Devils and allowed 1 hit with 5 K's. The Devils scored 3 more in the 3rd on singles by Ralph Hegedus, Marc T and Todd C sandwiched around an error. Another unearned run for the Devils in the 4th made it 6-0 and Ed Martin replaced Bryant on the hill. Ed went two scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit. DaveB then hit a monster HR into the wind for the Devils to make it 7-0. Newcomer Campanella came on to pitch in his first outing since high school and allowed one unearned run in two innings. In the 8th the Devils used 3 hits and a walk to plate 4 more runs to make it 11-1. Zack Siembor pitched the 8th for the Devils in his first career NABA outing, allowing 1 hit with 1 K. Mike led the Wings, reaching base all 4 times on a single, double, walk and error. Paul drove in the Wings run and was on base 3 of 4 plate appearances. Zach hit a shot to CF in the 5th that was run down on a nice catch by GilB. The Devils turned two DP's on the day. Field was in good shape and the umps did a good job.
Game 6  Devils VS Phillies  6/17/2007  Fisher  1:30pm

The Devils prevailed in another nailbiter, defeating the Phillies 5-4 at Fisher Sunday afternoon. The Phillies threatened in the top of the first, when Merrell walked and then stole 2nd and 3rd. He was on 3rd with 2 outs when Steve Ruffino smoked a ball up the middle, only to be robbed on a diving stab at 2b by Rick Dyer. The Devils were blanked in their half of the first. Phillies got a 2-out walk in the 2nd but the inning ended on a nice running catch by Todd Campanella in LF. The Devils got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd. Pete O'Dell led off with a walk and back-to-back singles by Gil Bussey and Adam Freeman got O'Dell home. An infield out by Campanella scored Gil and the Devils led 2-0. The Phillies used a 2-out error and a walk to threaten in the 3rd but Taranto worked out of the jam. In thier half of the 3rd the Devils made it 3-0 when Ralph Hegedus came thru with a 2-out single scoring Dyer. In the 4th the Phil's Brian Renica led off with a nice bunt that was thrown away putting him on 2nd base with no outs. Two flies to LF held him there. Then Ruffino crushed one right back up the middle that Taranto knocked down (or else he'd have been killed by it) for the out to end the inning. The Phillies broke thru in the 5th. The first two batters reached on errors. A sac fly by Drake made it 3-1. J.Delly then popped out for the 2nd out. R.Candelaria then got the Phillies first hit of the day, scoring T.Fadden. A double by Rizzo and a single by Gingreco made it 4-3 Phillies and Taranto was done for the day after escaping with no further damage. The Devils were blanked in their half of the 5th. Dave Bryant came on to pitch for the Devils and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th Eddie Crawford led of with a walk and Jay Hamilton followed with a 2B to RF, but Crawford was thrown out at the plate on a nice relay by the Phil's. Rick Dyer singled to score Hamilton and tie the game and followed that up by stealing 2nd. The inning ended quickly, however, when the Phil's picked Dyer off 2nd and Hegedus K'd. After setting the Phil's down in order in the top of the 7th, Bryant helped himself when he lined a 1-out double down the LF line. Two pitches later he took off on a steal of 3rd and the throw went into LF allowing him to come around with the go-ahead run. Both teams went down in order in the 8th. The Phil's drew a walk to start the 9th and then B.Renica hit into a 3-6 FC. After a K for the 2nd out the game ended when Brian faked a steal for 2nd on the pitch and the Devils C, Pete O'Dell, threw down to first and Renica was called out on a bang-bang play.
Overall it was a close, tense, fun game the whole way. There were a number of close plays and iffy calls in the field (including the game-ender). The HP ump was very consistent. A number of good plays on both sides and two very evenly matched teams.
The play of the day was nearly turned in by veteran Ed Renica all while sitting in his folding chair behind the backstop. A foul ball approached and he reached back, back, way back to make the barehand play - and he would have had it for sure if he hadn't tipped over backwards. After scrambling around and regaining his feet, he did come up ball in hand and display it to the ump, but it was ruled no catch. Valiant effort.
There were some tense moments and more words exchanged than needed to be at times, but given the high number of close plays with guys sliding into bases and such, it was understandable. In the end the cooler heads prevailed as there is no place for that kind of nonsense anyway. All in all it was a fun day with a good bunch of guys playing good solid baseball.
Game 7  Devils @ Storm  6/24/2007  Fisher  10am

A beautiful day for baseball today and the Devils & Storm hooked up to play 9 at Fisher. The Storm were the home team and got on the board first against Devils starter Rick Dyer, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second all with two outs. Adam drew a walk, Junior got on when MarcT booted a ball at 2b. Dave laced a line drive to CF scoring Adam and then MarcT booted another ball to score Junior. Mike came out of the gate pitching strong for the Storm K'ing 4 in the first 3 innings. The Devils tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the 4th thanks to 2 Storm errors, a wild pitch, and a 2-out RBI single by Pete O'Dell. Rick Dyer finished his day on the hill by starting a 1-4-3 DP to end the bottom of the 4th. Gil Bussey led off the Devils 5th with a single, stole second, moved to 3rd on a passed ball and came home on a sac fly by Todd Campanella. Two walks and two hit batters pushed another run in for the Devils and they went up 4-2. In the bottom of the 5th the Storm got a leadoff double from Adam and a single by Junior put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs against new Devils pitcher MarcT. He worked out of the jam by getting an infield pop, a comebacker, and a flyout to LF to keep it 4-2. Devils MarcT singled with 1 out in the 6th, stole second, and scored on a single by O'Dell. Cuzzin Eddie Crawford scored the last Devils run in the 8th. Dave Bryant threw 3 scoreless innings for the Devils to close the game out and earn the save.
The Storm battled hard all day and made a number of nice defensive plays to keep themselves in the game, forcing the Devils to leave the bases loaded three times. There were no injuries (except for one Devil's "aggravated bunion" - we won't tell anyone Jay). The umps were fantastic. Todd did a nice, consistent job behind the plate and Butch was the best field ump we've seen all season. Class acts, both of them.
The Storm look for redemption this Wednesday as the same two teams meet at UofR at 5:30pm. See you guys there.
Game 8  Devils VS Storm  6/27/2007  Fisher  5:45pm

Don't have the book so I'm working from memory. Frankly, this game wasn't too memorable. It was a fairly sloppy affair with the two teams combining for well over 20 BB's. It was a see-saw battle from the start. Storm went up 2-0 in the top of the first, Devils tied it 2-2. Storm went up 5-2 in the second. Devils tied it 5-5. Storm went up 7-5 in the third. Devils got 3 to go up 8-7 after 3 innings. Storm tied it 8-8 in the top of the 4th. Devils went up 12-8 in the bottom of the 4th and then held the Storm scoreless in the 5th and 6th for the win. Devils Ed Martin broke out of his slump with a single, double and triple. Gil Bussey knocked in a couple with a double to deep LF. Adam made 3 real nice catches in LF for the Storm. All in all we were happy to get the game in and both sides had a lot of laughs along the way. Storm ... how did you lay off those pitches ?? And what was that animal next to our dugout ... Gopher ? Groundhog ? Beaver ???
Game 9  Devils @ Cubs  7/1/2007

This writeup may take a while, I'll probably have to run to the can and hurl once or twice. The Devils actually led 3-0 early before they took the field - and I use that term loosely. The Cubs used 10 walks, 5 hits and 3 errors against 3 different Devils pitchers to forge a 13-3 lead after 3 innings. The top 4 Cubs hitters were 12-for-12 on base and scored 12 runs in that span. For the game, MarkS was on base all 6 times with 3 singles, 3 walks and scored 5 runs. Brian was also on base all 6 times with two singles, two walks, reached on an error, had a HBP and also scored 5 times. MikeS reached all 6 times and scroed 4 runs with 3 BB's, a single and two reach-on-error. In total the Cubs drew 17 walks and had 10 hits. Billy threw the whole game for the Cubs and managed to protect the lead well. The Cubs D came up big too, with 3 caught stealings.
The Devils banged out 10 hits of their own. Jay Hamilton reached base all 4 times for the Devils on two singles, a BB and a FC. Dave Bryant was 3-for-3 but may be lost for the season after catching a spike and rolling his ankle. The Devils did rally to cut it to 15-7 but the Cubs answered every Devils run with one of their own.
Game 10  Devils VS Padres  7/8/2007  10am  Arcadia

Good overcame Evil in the Biblical Battle. The game was a 10am start at Arcadia and the skies looked ominous from the beginning but we got the whole nine in.
The Padres struck first against Devils starter Dave Bryant in the top of the first. Mark Manioci walked, stole second, and came home on a two-out, opposite field single by Bill Mitchell. The Devils came back in the bottom of the first. Jay Hamilton walked to start the inning but was picked off by Padres pitcher, Manioci. Rick Dyer then hit the first of four triples on the day by the Devils. A RBI groundout by Marc Taranto tied it up. After a scoreless 2nd inning, the Padres struck again in the third. Dennis Tubolino led off with a mammoth single just over pitcher's mound, stole second and scored on another Mitchell single. The Padres loaded the bases with two outs but Bryant escaped further damage. Manioci cruised thru the bottom of the third allowing only a single by Jay Taranto and the Padres led 2-1. In the top of four as the rain started coming down, the Padres tacked on 3 more runs using a Dennis T. triple, a Mitchell double, and 4 walks to go up 5-1. In the bottom of the fourth the Devils loaded the bases with one out on a single by Pete O'Dell, walk to Gil Bussey and single by Big Ed Martin. With an 0-2 count on Adam Freeman the game as delayed by lightning. After the delay, Freeman hit the first pitch for a bases-clearing triple to left center. Manioci then K'd the next two batters to strand Freeman and leave the Padres up 5-4. Marc Taranto relieved Bryant and pitched a scoreless top of the 5th. Manioci answered by striking out the side in the bottom. The Padres broke the game open in the top of the 6th with 5 runs. Mitchell singled, stole second and scored on Todd Schoen's single. A walk and a FC put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. An error on an infield blooper scored the second run of the inning and the floodgates opened. Two walks, a hit batter, and a Manioci single plated 3 more but a flyout by Mitchell with the bases loaded left the Devils with a 10-4 deficit but some hope. Unfortunately, Manioci was getting better as the game went on. He cruised thru the 6th and 7th allowing just one hit with 4 K's. Todd Schoen hit a triple to lead off the Padres 7th and scored on an errant throw by Devils first-baseman-turned-third-baseman Big Ed and the Padres led 11-4 after 7. Taranto pitched the Devils only 1-2-3 inning of the game in the top of the 8th. In the bottom Adam Freeman's second triple of the day scored Gil to make it 11-5. In the ninth the Padres got a leadoff double by Mitchell - his 5th hit of the day - but Taranto worked out of the jam with a pickoff and two flyouts. Neu came on the pitch the 9th for the Padres and the Devils wouldn't quit, loading the bases on a single by Jeff Mountain, walk to Dyer and single by O'Dell. Gil Bussey cleared the bases with a triple to deep left-center and it was 11-8. Ed Martin then laced a shot between first and second which was stabbed by an airborne Schoen to end the game. A web gem, for sure. Real good game all around.
For the Padres: Manioci scattered 9 hits over 8 innings and had 14 K's. Dennis had two hits and two walks. Karp managed 4 walks and a HBP and Schoen had two hits and a walk.
For the Devils: Gil had two hits and a walk, Adam was 2-4 with 4 RBI's, and O'Dell and Mountain had two hits each.
Padres beware, Mountain has already started planning the plagues to bestow on you. Frogs in your bat bag, locusts in your helmets, boils, hail, flies, whatever it takes. Perhaps a bite of the forbidden fruit. Good can't always beat Evil, can it ?? See you guys in 10 days.
Game 11  Devils VS Phillies  7/15/2007  Aquinas 3pm

The two games at Aquinas were exactly what Position Week was intended to create. Two close games against evenly matched teams.
In game one the Braves survived a 9th inning rally by the Red Wings to scratch out a 7-5 win. Brian Kesel went 8 1/3 for the Braves to earn the win.
In game two the Phillies avenged their earlier 5-4 loss to the Devils with a hard-fought 6-5 win. The Phillies opened the scoring with 3 runs in the 3rd inning. The Devils got two in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 3-2 but the Phillies added one right back in the 6th on a two out double. The Devils pulled within 4-3 with a run in the 7th but again the Phillies answered with two in the top of the 8th to make it 6-3. The Devils rallied again with two in their half of the 8th to make it 6-5. Both teams went down in order in the 9th and the Phillies took home the victory. Excellent game, good umps. More details when I get the book in front of me.
Game 12  Devils @ Padres  7/19/2007  Fisher 5:45pm

Somehow, some way, the weather stayed away on Thursday and the Devils and Padres got the game in at beautiful St John Fisher field. The game started in a light drizzle and for the first three innings Todd Schoen of the Padres and Rick Dyer of the Devils matched zeroes. Both teams made excellent defensive plays in that stretch. For the Devils, Tim Lancto snared a liner at short and doubled off the runner that was on second base in the first inning and in the second RF Gil Bussey threw out Craig Jones at the plate. For the Padres Murph and Dom both made a number of plays at 3B and SS. With a steadier rain falling, Neu took over for the Padres in the 4th and tossed another zero. Bryant came on for the Devils and the Padres scratched a run across on a base hit by <no book, no memory> but ended up leaving the bases loaded. Steve Saluzzo, the Fisher caretaker, then informed the teams that the 5th inning would be it. With one out, Marc Taranto doubled down the LF line. After Gil Bussey struck out Adam Freeman came to the plate and fell behind 0-2. After fouling off one pitch he then lined a single to CF and Taranto slid into the plate just ahead of the ball to tie the game 1-1. Then Mother Nature gave both teams a gift and the rain let up and Saluzzo was gracious enough to let the game keep going. And keep going it did with zero after zero going onto the board. Bryant and Neu deuled into the 7th when the Devils loaded the bases with one out. Mark Manioci came on and K'd Bryant for the second out and got Taranto on a soft liner to 2B to end the threat and keep it tied. Bryant escaped trouble in every inning and it remained 1-1 after 8. At that point the umps told the teams that the pending darkness meant the 9th would be the last inning. Both teams broke out some new baseballs and into the 9th it went. Tim Lancto started the inning with a grounder between 1st and 2nd that just got past a diving Todd Schoen to put the leadoff runner on. Ed Martin, behind in the count 1-2, then hit a swinging bunt down to third. Murph made a valiant effort to get Martin at first but an errant throw put Devils on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Rick Dyer came to the plate with the infield in and hit a high chopper over the mound to 2B which hung in the air just long enough to allow the runner to score. Manioci then worked out of the jam without allowing another run and it went to the bottom of the 9th with the Devils up 2-1. Craig Jones drew a leadoff walk. After Bryant got a K for the first out Jones was caught stealing by Pete O'Dell and one last K ended the game.
After a number of close ones, this is the first time the Devils have managed to top the Padres. We always have a great time playing you guys and look forward to more matchups in the future.
Game 13  Devils @ Red Stox  7/21/2007  Aquinas 10am

The Devils and Stox hooked up at Aquinas Saturday morning and it went as advertised in the Game of the Week corner. Marc Taranto and Danny Herman went toe to toe in a 9-inning pitchers duel and Herman and the Red Stox came out on top when Mickey Parker hit a two-run walk-off HR with one out in the bottom of the 9th. Is this an NABA first ? Does anyone ever remember a walkoff dinger in the history of the league ? Please tell me it's the first time ever so I can take solace in being the goat that allowed it, just like whatever slob ends up allowing Bonds' pharmacological miracle HR #756. Anyway, here's how the game went, roughly, since I don't have the book and I've been drowning my sorrows.
Devils got a run in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Jay Hamilton singled, stole second, moved to 3rd on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a single by Ralph Hegedus. Another hit by Taranto had Devils on 2nd and 3rd with one out but Herman worked out of the jam by getting a couple K's in there somewhere. The Devils scored again in the third when Hamilton led off with a single to RF that got by the outfielder allowing him to motor all the way to third. A Hegedus groundout scored the run for a 2-0 lead in the 3rd. It was still 2-0 in the 5th when the Stox finally got to Taranto with a couple hits and a Sac fly to make it 2-1. A real funny play happened in the bottom of the 6th. The Stox had runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs when the Devils tried the old trick pickoff play. CF Todd Camapanella came racing in behind the runner but the bonehead pitcher threw the ball away - into CF - where there was nothing but green grass. RF Eddie Crawford busted a$$ to get over and pick up the ball, hit Taranto with the throw who relayed it to the plate and nailed the runner by a hair - saving himself the embarrassment of allowing the dumbest run of the day ... for now. The Devils scored in the top of the 7th using a two-out rally capped by Gil Bussey's RBI single to make it 3-1. The Stox Jim Voss then went deep to start the home half of the 7th and cut it to 3-2. With one out and a runner on third for the Stox, the Devils pulled the IF in. The Stox hitter (forget who) then blooped a single that landed at the back of the infield dirt to tie the score. That's how it stayed into the 9th when Herman allowed a 2-out single to Hegedus. The threat ended when the ageless Jim Entwistle threw Hegedus out stealing (Jim's 2nd CS of the day). That may be an NABA record, too. The oldest P/C combined ages to throw out two base stealers in one game ?? Anyhow, I guess I have to finish this little story now, as bad as it feels. Bottom 9, one out, Voss rips a single to LF. Mickey Parker comes to the plate, Taranto falls behind 2-0 and hangs a curve. Parker launches it, Bussey chases it, no chance, WALK OFF DINGER. Game over. The resurgent Stox take the Devils 5-3. The Devils head for the ice packs after 3 games in 6 days.
Always a pleasure to play the Stox. Great day for baseball, too. Best of luck the rest of the way. Oh, and for the record. both teams played stellar defense all day. I think there were only two or three errors total. Umps were good too.
Game 14  Devils @ Rockies  7/29/2007  Spencerport  10am

The Devils outlasted a depleted Rockies team in a sloppy game at Spencerport HS. The Rockies, forced to play with 8 guys, got out to early leads of 2-0 and 5-2 with help from the Devils who committed 4 errors in the first 3 innings. The Devils rallied to tie it 5-5 when Zack Siembor ignited a two-out rally by beating out an infield hit with a head-first dive into 1st. Rick Dyer plated 3 runs when he doubled down the first-base line. The Rockies forged back ahead at 7-5 but the Devils chipped away. A run-scoring FC by MarcT made it 7-6 after 3 innings. Dave Bryant came into pitch for the Devils in the 4th and completely shut down the Rockies the rest of the way. Then, with the Devils up 8-7 in the bottom of the 6th Bryant broke the game open by hitting a grand slam. Props to Jeff Mountain for a pair of defensive gems. Props to the Rockies for hanging in there despite playing very thin on a hot day.
Game 15  Devils VS Red Wings  8/5/2007  U of R  10am

The two teams pounded out a total of 27 hits in this one. It was neck and neck for most of the game. It was 6-6 in the bottom of the 6th when the Devils broke thru for 4 runs to take the lead for good. The Wings rallied to cut it to 10-8 but the Devils got the two back in the bottom of the 7th.
For the Wings - Josh had two hits and two walks, Mike had three hits, Zach had two hits and a walk, and Mark had a double to deep left center that scored two runs and put the Wings up 6-5.
For the Devils, MarcT had three hits and two walks, Mountain had two hits with a walk, as did Cuzzin Eddie Crawford and Zack Siembor. Todd Campanella had two hits and Adam Freeman hit both the longest double of the day and the shortest Sac Fly of all time.
Fun game on both sides. Plate ump was good. Field ump tried hard but made a few pretty bad calls.
